Things are heating up...
Having seen Michael Moore's recent film, Sicko, I' m a bit disappointed in Democratic debate tonight that there was not more opportunity for all candidates to address the problem. How do we change this country one that shares the wealth with concern for the welfare of all our citizens? To move from the "me, me, me" stance to a united "we"? It is ridiculous that we rank 37 in healthcare among Western nations, that people live longer on average in Canada, England and France, and that we have a higher rate of infant death. How do we allow pharmaceutical companies to dictate what we pay for their drugs and insurance companies to decide what health problems they will cover to the exclusion of others? This is something we should be embarassed and truly angry about and yet I hear folk say they won't see the movie because of who made it....is this kill the messenger because they don't like the message? Someone has to speak up!

I agree with you, Kay. If people want to disagree with Michael Moore, that's their option, but first they have to hear what he's saying. I think they're so afraid that they'll agree that they don't want to know. I admire his bravery - although in some films, while I agree with almost all his conclusions, I've found he took a few cheap shortcuts. But thank goodness he's there!
Here Here! Michael Moore was on Hardball on the Plaza on MSNBC the other day and I couldn't believe the # of people who were telling him he had no right to suggest solutions to healthcare because he is only a filmmaker! Who are these people?!? Like the "experts" are doing such a great job... Like only an expert can see a problem and have a right to speak about it! Some of the people hadn't even seen the film or heard his ideas - they just objected to his opinion because it was his. One girl asked him how he felt about that, and he said it was really confusing and disheartening. Yes, it is.
I think Moore left out some important problems with the health care in those countries along with the incredibly good things that do happen in our country...he left them out to make a point, the point being that we do just a lousy job of providing health care to millions of uninsured Americans.
It's called money and greed!!! There was a great show on NBC the other night about the pharmaceutical industry and 15 of the people in Congress to pass that darn bill that disallowed Medicare "to shop around" for better prices NOW work for the lobbyists. There used to be a law against that, truly!
Lots of people have seen "Sicko" and have somehow come up with the idea that Canadians have free health care. This Canadian is letting you know that that is not the case. We have rather high taxes (which help finance our health care system) but my husband and I pay up to $300/month for our provincial health care and extended benefits. It is not free.
You said, "is this kill the messenger because they don't like the message?". Actually, it's the other way around. I will not watch anything Michael Moore produces because Michael Moore is such a lier.
